Ukadiche Modak or Steamed Modak is one of the most popular and traditional Modak variety made during Ganesha festival in Maharashtra.
for the outer cover of the Modak
Rice flour 1 cup
Water 1 cup
Ghee 1 Tsp
Salt A pinch
for the inner sweet filling of the Modak
Fresh grated Coconut 1 cup
Grated Jaggery 3/4 cup
Mortal paste of Cardamom 1/4 Tsp
Poppy seeds 1 Tbsp
Crushed dry fruits 1 Tbsp
Of sweet filling
Mix all the sweet filling Ing. in a pan except dry fruits. Cook this mixture on a very low flame. Cook until the mixture starts binding together very well. Switch off the gas stove. Add crushed dry fruits mix n keep aside.
Of outer cover of the Modak
In a pan, add 1 cup of water, ghee and salt. Let this water come to a boiling point. Reduce the flame and add Rice flour gradually. Quickly stir n mix the flour with water. Switch off the flame and cover the pan with lid for 7-10 min.
Take all the flour in a Thali/ big plate. Gather the dough together and begin to knead.
The dough will be hot when you begin to knead. So apply some ghee or water on your Palms. If you feel the dough is dense or hard u can use water. Continue kneading until the dough is smooth in appearances.
Before you start shaping the Modaks, heat water for steaming in Modak patra or in a pan. Grease the steamer plate with ghee.
Make small size balls from the dough. Grease your palm with ghee, roll the balls till smooth and without any cracks. Cover the dough balls with kitchen towel.
Take a ball and flatten it with fingers to a shallow bowl shape. Place approx. A tb. of filling in the centre. Bring together all the edges and join them. Shape n taper the Modak with fingers. Or shape the Modaks in Modak mould for easy n same size Modaks. Make all the Modaks, keep in steamer. Cover n steam for 10-15 min.on medium-low flame.
Once the Modaks are steamed, place this Modaks carefully in a plate, fizzle some ghee on the Modaks.
The Ukadiche Modak are ready to be offered to Lord Ganesha!!!
