In SOUTH INDIA Rice is harvested during Pongal And therefore different varieties of Rice based dishes are prepared.

PULIHORA in Andhra or tamarind rice is a dish prepared in most of the festivals of SOUTH INDIA.

Its a tangy flavoured rice mixed in tamrind sauce and spices and garnished with peanuts.

It tastes great with plain yogurt and appadam (papad)




Cooked rice (each grain should be seperated)- 2 cups

Turmeric-1/4 t.spoon

Oil-3/4 t.spoon

Salt to taste

Fresh curry leaves-20

Roasted Peanuts-1/2 cup

Tamrind extract-4  tb.spoon

Chana dal-1 tb.spoon

Urad dal-1 tb.spoon                              

Mustard seeds-1/2 t.spoon     20150111_180612

Cumin seeds-1/2t.spoon             

Dry Red Chillies-5

Green Chillies slit length wise-4

Chopped Ginger-1t.spoon

Astafodia-1/4 t.spoon

Seasame seed powder-1t.spoon




Heat 2 tb.spoon Oil in a vessel. Add Mustard seeds and let them splutter. Now add Cumin seeds,Astafodia, dry Red Chillies, Chana dal, Urad dal and fry till they turn light brown (approx. 15-20 seconds). Then add Green Chillies,Ginger, Astafodia and Curry leaves,  fry them for 10 seconds. Now add Tamrind extract and cook it till the raw smell disappears (approx.3-4 min.)

Mix it in rice, adjust salt, add Seasame seed powder and Peanuts.

Serve with plain Yogurt and Papad.
